  • 1970 Galanos Couture Documented Metallic Silk Pleated Gown w/ Necklace

An important and well-documented Galanos metallic silk gown ensemble dating back to fall-winter 1970. Dedication to excellence in craftsmanship and design was the foundation of James Galanos' career. The quality of workmanship found in his clothing is unsurpassed in America today. It may seem a contradiction that his sophisticated, mature and elegant clothing were designed and produced in Southern California, traditionally the land of sportswear. But Galanos was satisfied to remain where he began his business in 1951, a continent away from New York and the center of the American fashion industry. This ultra-chic three piece gown is a perfect example of his talent. The fabric itself is a masterpiece; light weight smoky-beige silk chiffon glistening with bold lamé silver. The dramatic bib-necklace is crafted from a shimmering metallic-knit, complete with oversized beaded tassel. Those wide-cuffs billow sleeves are so gorgeous. I love the optional smocked sleeveless vest with is a statement piece in its own right. The skirting has complex pleat work which is insanely hard to do on such fine fabric. This figure flattering garment accentuates the bust, skims the hip and falls to the floor with beautiful flair. We needed to add many detail pictures so one can appreciate the masterful achievement. Extravagant garments from the 1970's remain a perennial favorite, perhaps because no other period combined such opulence with such effortless glamour. This is such a beautiful museum worthy piece of fashion history that will instantly become a favorite in your collection.

    Measurements
    Bust: 34-35 inches
    Waist: 28 inches
    Hips: 37 inches
    Total Length: 57 inches

This stunning Galanos couture three-piece ensemble is in excellent condition with no rips, stains or holes. The garment is all hand-finished with perfectly working back zippers. Only sign of age is some some pulls to the silver lamé. Highly wearable and an investment piece that will continue to increase in value.
