    Zandra Rhodes

  • 1970 Zandra Rhodes Hand-Painted 'Indian Feathers' Sheer Silk Dress Set

Zandra Rhodes was one of the British designers who put London at the forefront of the international fashion scene in the 1970's. Her designs are considered creative statements, dramatic but graceful, bold but feminine. Zandra is renowned for her use of prints, and this look from her ‘New York and ‘Indian Feathers’ Fall/Winter 1970 collection really lets her brilliance shine through. According to Rhodes, on a trip to New York she visited the National Museum of the American Indian where she was fascinated and inspired by the costume designs featuring feathers, porcupine quills and beads which inspired this iconic collection. This exemplar of Rhodes' early work is an important find for the serious collector. The ethereal blouse floats over the body like a delicate butterfly. It is constructed of a fine black semi-sheer silk chiffon that is entirely hand-painted with a heavily pleated silk bib bodice. The feather print is embellished all over the black silk chiffon in beautiful colors of turquoise, pink and purple. I adore the wide scalloped sheer sleeves and three-dimensional cut out feather appliques which look incredible with movement. The matching elasticized waist skirt flatters the figure and creates an unforgettable silhouette. The set, which when worn together is an absolutely chic look, can also be separated for a different vibe. Rhodes' exotic originality makes her work among the most copied in the fashion world today. The pictures speak for themselves.

This Zandra Rhodes couture blouse with matching skirt are in excellent condition with no discoloration, stains or alternations. The blouse has no closures and slips over the head. The matching skirt has an elastic waist and is very generous in cut. Only sign of age are a few very tiny pin-holes to the chiffon which are not noticeable when worn. Please message for detailed pictures. As shown, a model wears the 'Indian feather sunspray' kaftan in this shoot for Japanese fashion magazine Anan in late 1971. Highly wearable and an investment piece that will continue to increase in value.
